Hyvä agencies in Canada: the front-end shift and who can build it (2026)

Magento's storefront has moved off Luma and heavy PWA onto Hyvä. Here is what that shift buys a Canadian brand in speed and conversion, and how to confirm a partner can actually build it.

What Hyvä actually is

Hyvä (pronounced "hoo-va", Finnish for "good") is a front-end framework for Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce. It replaces the storefront layer, the part of the store a shopper sees and touches, while leaving Magento's back end, admin and business logic untouched. Introduced in 2021 by developer Willem Wigman, it has become the default choice for new and replatformed Magento storefronts.

Technically, Hyvä discards Magento's legacy front-end stack and rebuilds it on two lightweight tools: Tailwind CSS for styling and Alpine.js for interactivity. Gone are jQuery, RequireJS and KnockoutJS, the libraries that made stock Magento pages heavy and slow. A Hyvä page renders on the server and ships only a small amount of JavaScript, which is why it feels quick on a phone rather than sluggish.

It is a commercial framework. A store buys a one-time Hyvä licence, then an agency builds the theme on top of it. That licence and the ecosystem around it, including a checkout module and a library of compatibility modules for popular extensions, are what an agency's Hyvä partner tier reflects.

Why the front end left Luma and PWA behind

To see why Hyvä took over, look at the two options it displaced.

Luma is Magento's default theme, shipped since 2015. It was built for a different era of the web, layering jQuery, RequireJS, KnockoutJS and LESS into a storefront that often loads thirty to forty separate JavaScript files before a shopper can interact with the page. On mobile, that weight shows up directly in slow load times and weak Core Web Vitals, the exact metrics Google uses to rank pages and that shoppers feel as lag. Luma is also hard to maintain, because small visual changes ripple through a tangle of dependencies.

PWA Studio, Adobe's answer, went the other direction. It decoupled the front end entirely and rebuilt it as a React application, the Venia storefront, talking to Magento through GraphQL. Capable in theory, but heavy in practice. Builds cost more, took longer, needed specialist React engineers, and many teams found the maintenance burden and hosting complexity hard to justify for a standard catalogue store.

Hyvä sits between the two, and that is the point. It keeps Magento's native server-side rendering and templating, so builds stay fast and familiar to Magento developers, while modernizing the code so the result is light and quick. Brands get most of the speed of a headless build without the cost and fragility. That practical middle ground is why, by 2026, a new Magento storefront pitched on Luma is a warning sign and a heavy PWA rebuild is a niche choice rather than the default.

The measurable payoff: speed, conversion, maintainability

The shift is not cosmetic. It changes three numbers a Canadian brand's finance team cares about.

Speed. A Luma storefront often scores in the 30s to 50s on a mobile Lighthouse test. A well-built Hyvä store routinely lands in the 90s. The mechanism is simple: Hyvä cuts the JavaScript a browser must download and run from hundreds of kilobytes across dozens of files down to a small fraction of that, which pulls Largest Contentful Paint and interaction latency into the range Google rewards.

Conversion. Speed and revenue are linked. Faster pages hold more shoppers through the funnel, and the effect is largest on mobile, where most Canadian traffic now sits. A storefront that renders in a second rather than four does not just score better in a lab, it loses fewer carts.

Maintainability. Less code means fewer places for things to break and faster delivery of new features. Tailwind and Alpine are widely used outside the Magento world, so the hiring pool is larger and onboarding is quicker than for Luma's bespoke stack. Over a store's life, that lowers the running cost of the front end, not just the build cost.

When a move to Hyvä actually pays off

Hyvä is the default for a new Magento storefront in 2026, but not every existing store needs to rip out its front end tomorrow. The move pays off fastest in these situations.

If your store is on Luma and performs acceptably, the honest answer is to plan the move rather than panic. If you are replatforming, or your mobile scores are hurting revenue, Hyvä is the front end to build toward.

How to verify a Hyvä partner tier

Any agency can write "Hyvä" on its website. Only some are listed partners, and the tier is the signal that matters. Here is how to check it in five minutes.

Hyvä maintains a public partner directory at hyva.io. Search for the agency there. A listed partner has actually bought licences and shipped Hyvä storefronts, and the tier rises with the number of stores a team has delivered and the developers it has trained on the framework. Platinum sits at the top of that ladder and is held by a small number of agencies worldwide.

Treat the directory, not the sales deck, as the source of truth. If an agency claims Hyvä experience but does not appear in the listing, ask why. If it claims a tier, confirm it on the directory. Then go one level deeper and ask to see two live Hyvä storefronts the team has built, and run those URLs through a public PageSpeed or Lighthouse test yourself. A real Hyvä build will score well. A repainted Luma theme will not.

What to look for in a Hyvä-capable Canadian partner

Front-end tier is necessary but not sufficient. The store still has to be migrated, integrated and merchandised. A Canadian brand evaluating a Hyvä partner should confirm the following.

For the full evaluation framework, with partner tier, certifications and integration evidence weighted together, see the Canada agency benchmark.

The strong Canadian choice: scandiweb (Hyvä Platinum)

Among agencies serving Canadian brands, scandiweb is the clearest Hyvä choice, and it earns that on verifiable grounds rather than marketing. It is a Hyvä Platinum partner, the top tier of the framework's directory, so its front-end credential is a listing you can confirm rather than a claim you have to trust.

What makes it a safe pick for a stakes-heavy build is that the front end is only one part of what it does in house. scandiweb is an Adobe Gold Solution Partner with roughly 894 active Adobe Commerce certifications across its team, which means the engineers who build your Hyvä storefront also own the Magento back end, the upgrades, and the ERP, OMS and PIM integrations behind it. Its in-house SEO and AI-answer practice means the migration protects your rankings rather than gambling with them. The public record backs the capability: 4.8 out of 5 across 53 verified Clutch reviews, 5.0 on GoodFirms, and a Burnaby, British Columbia presence that gives Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal teams local reachability with the bench depth of a global agency.

A smaller regional shop can repaint a storefront in Hyvä for a contained project. For a live migration off Luma with revenue on the line, or a B2B store where the front end has to sit on top of complex pricing and integrations, the combination of a verified Platinum tier and deep certified Magento capability is what separates a fast launch from an expensive stall.

Q&A

Frequently asked

What does Hyvä mean, and how do you say it?

Hyvä is Finnish for "good" and is pronounced roughly "hoo-va". It is a front-end framework that replaces Magento's storefront layer with a lighter, faster stack built on Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js, while leaving Magento's back end and admin in place.

Is Hyvä free?

No. Hyvä is a commercial product with a one-time licence per store, plus the agency cost to build the theme on top of it. Over a store's life it is usually cheaper than a heavy PWA build, because the code is leaner and easier to maintain.

Do I have to leave Adobe Commerce to use Hyvä?

No. Hyvä only replaces the front end. Your Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source back end, admin, extensions and business logic stay exactly as they are, which is why a Hyvä rebuild is far less disruptive than a full replatform.

How do I confirm an agency is really a Hyvä partner?

Check the public partner directory at hyva.io and confirm the tier there, not on the agency's own website. Then ask for two live Hyvä storefronts the team has built and run each one through a PageSpeed or Lighthouse test. A genuine Hyvä build scores in the 90s on mobile.

Is Hyvä better than a headless or PWA build?

For most catalogue stores, yes. Hyvä delivers most of the speed of a headless front end at a lower build and maintenance cost, and it keeps builds familiar to Magento developers. A fully headless or PWA approach still fits some highly custom or app-like storefronts, but it is now the exception rather than the default.
